Qigong Is Coming to BTOA—Come Find Your Flow!

Flyer for QiGong mindful movement practice

Temple member Tammy Hamano will be offering a four-week Qigong (Chi Kung) class at the Buddhist Temple of Alameda this October. Open to the public, the classes are another way our temple can welcome members of the wider community onto our grounds while offering a peaceful practice for body and mind.

Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice of gentle, repetitive movements performed slowly and mindfully. The word Qi (pronounced “chee”) refers to life force or vital energy, while Gong means work or skill cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qigong can be understood as the practice of “cultivating energy.”

Similar to Tai Chi, Qigong combines movement, breathing, and a meditative quality. Tammy describes it as “meditation in motion.” Her classes incorporate Shenzen, Chow, and Shibashi Qigong, and no previous experience is necessary—all levels are welcome.

The four classes will be held on Fridays, October 9, 16, 23, and 30, from 11:00 a.m. to noon. When the weather cooperates, the group will practice outdoors on the temple grounds; otherwise, classes will move indoors to the Social Hall. Participants should wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing and sneakers, sports sandals, or flip-flops.

The cost is $22 for a single class or 72forallfourclasses(18 per class). Advance registration and payment are available through the online process (see flyer) OR for those who prefer to pay at the door should email Tammy at [email protected] to reserve a spot and arrive 15 minutes before class. Payment at the door may be made by exact cash or by check payable to Tammy Hayano.

As part of this community offering, a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to BTOA.

We hope temple members will consider giving Qigong a try—and please help spread the word to friends, neighbors, and others who might enjoy an hour of mindful movement in the welcoming setting of our temple.
